The mandate 2005-2008 has been one with new challenges, new hopes, and that of a new vision. The Nursing Council team and the sub committees have been actively involved in the realisation of the following, to better answer to the pressing needs of all nurses. However, the main focus is to provide a better customer orientated services to registered nurses and the public .
Computerisation of services
Regulations made to the Nursing Council Act 2003 to include the followings
New application form for registration purposes
Certificate of registration
Quantum of fees payable to the council in respect of items specified in the first column of the third schedule.
In line with the decision taken by the registration committee, members of council moved to all Regional Hospitals, District hospitals, Private Health Institutions and at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Rodrigues, to facilitate Nurses, Midwives and Assistant Nurses to get registered.
Following the above exercise a data base and an up to date register list for Nurses and midwives are readily available at the Council.
For the first time since the existence of the Council an up to date list of registered Nurses and Midwives will be gazetted in the Government Gazette as stipulated by the Nursing Council Act of 2003, on a yearly basis.
Members of the Council were invited to form part in Committees and Panels instituted by the University of Mauritius, the Mauritius Qualification Authority, the Tertiary Education Commission, the Human Resource Development Council and the Ministry of Health and Quality of life. This was in view to get the Council expertise on different issues pertaining to the development in Education and Training for Health and Social care development.
Vetting of Curricula from Private Nursing Training Institutions.
Approval of the curriculum in Diploma in Mental Health in view to register Diploma holders in Mental Health Nursing as registered Mental Health Nurse.
Approval of Diploma in General Nursing for;
Apollo Bramwell Hospital
Mauritius Institute of Health
Review and finalization of the Code of Practice for Nurses
Preparation of Standards for Nursing Practice
Advise the Public Service Commission and the Tertiary Education Commission on the equivalence of certain qualifications in Nursing.
Preparation of a Clinical Training Framework in view to set well defined criteria prior to setting up of Private Training Institution for Nursing Education in Mauritius.
Work on the design of an Identification Badge and issue of the said badge to all registered Nurses in Mauritius.
