Education & Training

In conformity with the Nursing Council Act 2003, section 12 (d) and (e), the Nursing Council of Mauritius (NCM) has the power

12 (d) to advise the Minister on the establishment and improvement of standards of education of Nurses and Midwives

12 (e) to promote the education and training of Nurses and Midwives.

The NCM places education and training at the heart of professional development of all nurses. The council strongly believes that quality education and training are key elements towards shaping the professional image and status of all nurses.

Currently, the Education Committee is working on a framework that will review and maintain standard of Nursing and Midwifery education for practice and post qualifying programmes. The following recommendations have already been addressed to the Ministry:

  • Launching of a Diploma programme in General Nursing
  • Introduction of courses for specialized nursing.
  • The shifting of Nursing Education to higher institutions like the Mauritius Institute of Education or University of Mauritius .
  • Those involved in training of nurses must hold at least a good Honours degree.

The NCM has recently build alliance with regulatory institutions namely the Tertiary Education Commission and the Mauritius Qualification Authority. These two bodies assist, monitor and evaluate overall quality assurance regarding training and programmes in post-secondary institutions.
